Currently, I have a 308 Semi Automatic.

Does one need a semi? No, I just got the gun at a great deal. I hunt with my family and my brothers and I all have different firearms.

It ranges from:
7mm to 30-06, 303 (old peep site firearm from the war) <- works like a charm, etc.

My dad now hunts with a Winchester 308, but believe it or not, he has killed the most moose throughout his life with a Winchester 30-30 and he still has it.

After all, first shot is the one that counts the most.

i have shot 3 moose wether i was sub permit hold or a permit holder. i have been able to call and potentially guide and know what to expect a moose to do since i was about 14 years old. and i also hunt with a 308. woodmaster 742. :D

in my opinion a 30/30 will kill it. but he'll walk off.
a 308 same thing in most cases.
now a 300 magnum will knock him down liek you want it to do.

dont go out of your way to buy a gun if u already have a 308, 7mm, even 30/30.

Using anything shy of a hot 30-06 load is not a responsible choice for moose in my opinion. 30-30 / .308 are not good choices for an animal of that size. Your best bet would be a 7mm / 300wm or larger. Most ALL guides would not let you hunt a moose with a 308/30-30.

alot of people around here are using a .270, still havent made up my mind. Shot a moose this fall with a .308 that my father owns, and it fell with one shot... sort of stuck between a little of everything now...

Started out shooting them with the 270, they would run 50 yards or so. But on the last 5-6 I've been using the 300 mag and the farthest went 10 yards but most drop.

it all depends on how far the moose is.at 50yrds a 30.30 will knock it down,at 300yrds you want a bigger gun like a 7mm.i saw guys take a moose at 500yrds with a 270.just hit it where it counts

Moose rifles

Remington 700 SPS 30-06, 180gr. rem. a-frame topped with bushnell elite 4200 1.5 to 6 x 36mm. Marlin 1895 45-70 gvt. 405gr. rem topped with bushnell banner dusk & dawn 1.5 to 4.5x32mm with leopold Q.R. rings for iron sight use if necessary. I hunt two areas, one treestand short distance with my 45-70 and the other is a two to three hundred yard shot with the 30-06. P.S. That's moose hunt.
Not to forget my loaded C.I.L. 20 guage single shot with a rifled slug in the outside crapper for unwelcome black furred predators.
You will not score 100% of the time if you don't shoot.
