which rifle

Postby grizz » Sat Oct 09, 2004 2:36 pm

out of the two the youth model 30/30 is better in my opinion , you have to consider arm lenght to reach the trigger with control.

The ole 30-30 in that particular rifle is pretty hard to beat.

Hey chunky

Have you concidered the drop of the 44 mag as compared to the 30-30?
Also if you intend on zero-ing a rifle like the 44mag you better be thick skinned in the shoulder!!
The smaller caliber rifles like the .243 thru the 30-30 are alot more fun to shoot.
My 7mm is all the caliber that I care to shoot---it's kind of like driving a classic car with a real big cam in it---sure it goes fast, makes alot of noise, etc but it also is uncomfortable to ride in, burns alot of pricey fuel,
and makes a nice stereo useless.
Go with the 30-30 it will knock a hole in anything you shoot at and do it cheaper and straighter!!

44mag drops 61.9" in 300 yards

30-30 drops 24.5" in 300 yards :D
.243 drops 11.1" in 300 yards :D
7mm drops 11.6" in 300 yards :D

:D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D
Hey looser,pick-up yer trash...yer mommy aint out here!!

I started out wiht a 30-30 and never missed the first 5 deer I had a chance at. OPEN SIGHTS! The old fasioned way. A great "brush" gun as well. Trusty ol' lever action.

No doubt - the 30-30 wins this one every time. It's got more range than the .44. With most lever actions, which is what I assume you're looking at, the 30-30 will be good out to nearly 200yds with an accurate load.

30-30 is probably going to be your best bet. But if you are hunting open terrain you are going to want to go with a new gun all around, like the 270 or the 30-06, but perferably the 270
Just a few more days till I am out of this state and in the state I love (Missouri) doin what I love.

.243 drop off

Postby dsmith_88 » Sun Nov 14, 2004 12:36 am

I saw that somebody wrote that a .243 drops 11" at 300yds....I am using the Remington Model 7 .243 with remington 100grain psp. and we put it in a vice. and bore sited it in, and at 300 yds it out shot the 270, 30 06 and 300, it only dropped 2.5" where did you come up with the 11"

243 trajectory ???

Postby carnivore » Sun Nov 14, 2004 9:38 pm

I seemed to have misplaced my rem. ammo balistic reference sheet but the win. 2002 chart i have shows 243 55GR ballistic silvertip sighted on bull at 100yds dropping 6.3 in. at 300 yds. and 3/4 high at 100 yds. falling to bull at 200yds. and then -4.3 at 300 yds.
243 100GR power point plus -0.3 at 50 yds. climbing to bull at 100 yds. and dropping to -11.1 at 300yds. and sighted to bull at 200 yds. then dropping to- 6.7 at 300yds.
the 80GR pointed soft point sighted to bull at 150 yds. and dropping -9.4 at 300 yds.
the 100GR. power point 1/2 high at 50 yds. then hitting bull at 150 yds. and dropping to -11.0 inches at 300 yds. or sighted at bull at 200 yds. then dropping to -7.8 at 300 yds. I have a brother that shot a whitetail at 415 yds. with a 243 100GR. corelokt rem. ammo and he told me he tried to estimate about 18 inches above the back and that deer scrambled a 20 foot circle and fell right over. So you must not be shooting a 100GR bullet or either winchester really messed up when they published their chart. Because I can verify the shot my brother made when he was judging roughly 18 inches over that deer.

Hey Matthew! Sounds like you have the right gun. As far as those two bucks go, be PROUD!!! I know grown men who would be jealous. Keep up the good hunting. If that was your first deer, then you really need to keep that gun for sentimental value and pass it on to your kids one day! Hey, congradulations, you're running with the big dogs now!!!

Matthew the 30-06 is probably the best all around caliber gun to own... you can adjust the GR size to whatever you are shooting... 150-165 gr is probably the most you will ever need for whitetail... and you can move up to 180 and up for bigger deer, elk mulies etc... congrats on your kills

the ole 30-30

Postby padeerhunter72 » Sat May 14, 2005 6:29 pm

personaly i would pick the 30-30 it is a great brush gun, and you can use it for basically and type of mammal game, so my choice would be 30-30

That's a great choice! Ya know that there has probably been more deer taken with a 30-30 than any other rifle!?! I hunted with one til I was about 18, then retired it for something that would reach out there around 300 yards! Hunting pastures and pipelines, I needed the extra reach!!!

What did you sight the .243 in at? That would be the main thing on this statement! You woulda had to sight it in at 200 or 300 yards to hit like that! And if you did, you liable to miss one at 50 yards  Were all guns sighted in at the same distance? I will agree that a .243 is a more flat shooting gun, but it just doesn't hold up to the distance!

I've got a Remington 243 and 7 mag. both sighted in at 100 yards! At 300 yards, I can put the 7mm in about 2 inches below a circle the size of a half dollar! The 243 will drop in anywhere from 9 1/2" to 11" every time!!!

Also, at 300 yards with a 243, chances are you won't have an exit wound! Don't get me wrong, they are a fine gun and I enjoy using mine alot!!!
