What's next? Whitetail cats?

Postby KwackWacker » Fri Jan 09, 2009 8:44 am

From an online article at news.com.au, which is an Australian based website.

A CAMPAIGN to rename fish as "sea kittens" in order to improve their image has been ridiculed by the Federal Opposition.

Outspoken animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) is using the "sea kitten" name as part of its push to restrict fishing.

"Nobody would hurt a sea kitten!" the group says on its website.

"People don't seem to like fish.

"We're going to start by retiring the old name for good.

"When your name can also be used as a verb that means driving a hook through your head, it's time for a serious image makeover."

The website features images of fish with cats' whiskers and ears.

PETA is using the campaign to entice people to sign a petition calling on the US Fish and Wildlife Service to stop promoting "the hunting of sea kittens (otherwise known as fishing)".

Opposition fisheries spokesman John Cobb was not impressed with the campaign, nor with PETA.

PETA has offended some in Australia with is high-profile campaign against mulesing, the practice of cutting away the skin from a sheep's rear to prevent flystrike.

Mr Cobb said the group had little credibility.

"It is hard to take an organisation which wants to change the name of fish seriously," he said.

Many people might laugh at the sea kitten campaign, Mr Cobb said, but PETA's agenda was actually more sinister: destroying the meat and fish industries.

PETA has convinced a number of large companies to boycott Australian wool which comes from mulesed flocks.

The group argues mulesing is cruel and there are better ways to prevent flystrike.

This is my favorite quote ""Nobody would hurt a sea kitten!" Obviously whoever said that has never met me or Doc. What are the dumbest things you've heard of PETA doing?

This could turn out to be a very long list....

-their idea of using human breast milk to replace cow's milk in ice cream because milking a cow is "in-humane"

-their idea to paint deer camouflage right before hunting season

-their praise of Steve-O from "Jackass" as a spokes person. In case you dont know, Steve-O is a self proclaimed drug addict and obvious mental midget (even though I find what he does to be pretty funny sometimes)

-their idea that you can and should "rescue" mice from glue traps

.....i could go on for quite a while....

I prefer the freshwater variety,,, rainbow water kitten,,,brown water kitten. I want to have my brown water kitten mounted and put on the wall, instead of the gentle sounds of a stream, i can have the meow mix tune playing,,,,meow meow meow meow.

PETA's certainly had some brilliant ideas over the years. (Sarc) LOL

Their idea for all the states and Fed govt to spay all the Whitetail and Mulie does was another one of their brilliant ideas, that was their response back in the 1980's and 90's to deer populations increasing and states making for more liberal hunting seasons to control the deer population.

As I recall they wanted the states and Fed Govt to capture and spay/render infertile all the Does that they could catch in the U.S. so that there wouldn't be fawns born and therefore any need for us mean animal murderers to hunt and kill them any more.

They didn't care that it would cost Billions of dollars to do and nearly impossible to catch and spay enough Does to do any good.

Luckily I think they care more about conveying an 'Image' of trying to do something to the movie stars/actors that give them money than actually coming out with ideas that can make sense, for the most part their past ideas have been so laughable that even a lot of the environmentalists see PETA as a bunch of loons.
