What Shotgun?

Postby JordanM » Wed Feb 04, 2009 6:16 pm

I am looking for a good all around shotgun that i can use to shoot stuff from squirels to coyotes thats under $200. What would be the best shotgun for this?

I believe you'll find your options extreemly limited for a new shotgun with $200 as a limit, you can find decent deals at that price for used shotguns at a gun show or pawn shop.

Some stores like Walmart might have a great sale in the late summer right before hunting season to get down close to that price on some shotguns but not likely right now.

Also if you intend on calling in coyotes lots of the shots presented are going to be 100-200yds out so a shotgun is useless and while you can hunt squirrels with a shotgun some prefer using a .22 with a scope and shoot them down out of the trees.

As far as a great all around shotgun I would probably go for the Remington 870 Express, its a pump shotgun and they even have some that are in a camo paint job which is great for turkey hunting, etc.

We use dogs to drive the coyotes so those shots are within at most 50 yds. I have a scope on my 22 and just wanted somthing with a little wider spread. I would also like to try some rabit hunting with a shotgun.

Well I learned something new, I know some use dogs to push deer but never have heard of driving coyotes with dogs until now.

Like I said the Rem 870 Express is a great quality shotgun for the price but unless its on sale or used you won't find it or any other good shotgun (brand name) for $200.

You might find a off brand for around that price but on weapons i've always been kind of leery about buying a 'Jim or Bill' brand because to me quality control and safety is important.

If buying something used isn't out of the question for you, we have a Classifieds area in the forum here and so you may find a shotgun that you like or check back from time to time.

New England Firearms/ old H & R make a line of repeating shotguns for around $200. 12ga. is the old standard for an all around gauge but thats a little heavy for squirrels. 12ga would and is my choice for coytes and fox's. I hunt everything but predators and deer with a 20ga. If you shop around for used shotguns there are alot of deals out there. Just have to be careful, theres a few crooks too. Coyote hunting with dogs is popular around here but not my cup of tea.
