While any food plot seed would probably come up on your land, how well it does and if it comes up well enough to be a factor in attracting numbers of deer depends on various factors like the length of growing season where you are located, the soil type on your land and if it gets good water and has drainage after heavy rains or if its swampy boggy land with no drainage at all and even the soil ph can all be factors to consider.

So what i'm trying to say is some plot mixes work well on dry well drained land and some work well on land that is always wet and some are more tolarant to wide ph differences and others need the ph to be in a particular area for them to do extreemly well and for your property those are questions only you know the answers to.

It would probably be a good idea to do a google search on 'whitetail institute', they have an area where they explain what type plot mixes work best based on those things I mentioned before like the type of land and amount of water and don't worry too much about price but use a well known brand because they all work or they wouldn't be in business for very long.

Also instead of being spoon fed, do some reading in this Food Plot section for more ideas on planting and working food plots, weve already answered your type questions many times in the past for others that have come here so do some reading and learn about it.

The first thing you want to do is have the soil for each plot tested. I did mine through Bio Logic. That will tell you how much lime and fertilizer you will need. You can get your seed mixes from one of the companies like Bio Logic or Whitetail Institute or you can spend less by getting your seed from a local ag co-op or feed and seed store (Agway, etc.). What part of NY are you in?

We do all of our planting with a 4 wheeler and a walk behind seed spreader, winter wheat is our biggest draw. You can buy it fairly cheaply at feed & seed stores etc. We're planting sugar beets, turnips and the commercial mix's right now so I havent priced wheat this year. We usually plant it in the middle of September. Last year I think it was $50/50lb's. We havent ever tested the soil either. If your in an area where the growing season is short or the soil isnt the greatest you may need to have it tested.
