Uhhh, I think that if you are scared of shooting a .308 then you might not need to be bear hunting!

I think that I would go with whatever is bigger and has more bullets and can be shot faster....while running!

If you can shoot the slug gun, you should be able to handle the .308. Have you considered using earmuffs when the action takes place? My neice is 10 and has a pair in her pack that she puts on before she shoots. Have them laid out if you are using a stand/blind so that they are in easy access. If you are still hunting hang them on your neck so that you can put them on easily.

The 243 will take down a bear. Just like the 223 on deer you wana make sure you can hit them in the kill zone. Now I wouldnt shoot a bear with a 243 at a long distance. One other thing if by chance you do go hunting with the 243 make sure you have a sidearm that can handle a bear.

Yea, like a bazooka. Ive always fancied them for side arms. It just hard to take my CCW all the time. Have ya'll ever tried to conceal an M1A2 Abrahms in you waist line? . They get a little heavy after a while.

I've never been bear hunting, would like to, but thats beside the point. I agree with everyone, the bigger the gun with the most ammo, a quick reload, and a big friggin side arm, and a hot gun never hurts. That is what I imagine as a minium. I MIGHT me over doing it though.

Well, the first time I went bear hunting I took my bow. I was shooting a recurve at the time and the guy I was hunting with laughed at me. I missed a couple, but ended up taking a nice bear ( not huge mind you, but any bear with a bow is nice, right?). The second time I went I had a compound, the guy that I was hunting with told me the golden rule of bear hunting and I quote "You don't have to run fast, you just have to run faster than the guy you are hunting with!" I always thought that was pretty darn funny.

As for the gun, a .243 will work, but I would opt for the .308. And when it comes time for the moment of truth, you won't even notice the bang or the kick.
Keep the tradition alive, teach a kid how to hunt.
