Image. my favorite deer rifle is my .270 Remington 700.

First deer rifle? A .243 that I got at Western Auto...layaway plan. :) Wish I still had it for sentimental reasons.

first deer rifle

Postby bambeklr » Mon Apr 25, 2005 10:21 am

I didnt start hunting deer with a rifle until I was in my teens. I started with a 30-06 model 700bdl remington. I love that gun and still have it. I have since then moved on to larger calibers but will never get rid of that gun. I killed my first rifle deer at 200yds. It was a spike buck. I was stoked. I will never forget it. I was hunting P.A and they said it was hard to see a buck. I got him the fist day and I was the second shot on the mountain.

My first deer rifle was a Remington 700 .243 my granddad gave to me for my 10th birthday. Still shoots as straight today as it did back then.

i think that you should get a 7mm-08 or a .243, or if u want a little more power you could get a .270[/b]

my first rifle was a rem. .308 mohawk. im 13 and think it has too much unneeded power! as a matter a fact i shot my first deer with it this year, and it threw me back into my dad and he even felt the recoil! sorry about the above response! i was on the wrong question

Welcome to the forum DeerHunterx........ 270 is a great caliber. It will due just fine for deer and moose. Me Personally I would rather have a 300 mag or higher for moose, but the fact remains you can kill a moose with a 270. Well the 270 can shoot as far as you need it to. Weather its accurate or not is up to the shooter. I wouldnt shoot the gun past 400yds. I just dont think Im good enough for much more than that.

.270s are great rifles but just a tad on the small side for moose. I mean we are talking about a car sized animal. It depends greatly on the shooter to make a killing shot at great distances but that caliber holds enough energy to kill deer out to and beyond five hundred yards but I wouldn't try a shot like that myself.

My first deer rifle was a Remington 742 .30-06 with a Bushnell Banner 3-9X Scope that I bought when I was about 15. School, career, and family took up so much time that I never got to actually go deer hunting until the day after I turned 40. By that time, the 742 had long since been stolen, so my first actual deer hunt was with a Remington 700 .30-06 with a Redfield 3-9X Scope.

This fall will be my 12 year old son's first deer hunt. He got a Remington Model 7 Youth .243 with a 3-9X Scope for his 12th birthday. And I got a new Remington 700 .243 with a Redfield 3-9X Scope for Father's Day. So, we'll both be toting new rifles into the deer woods this fall...

Thanks. My son had never shot anything bigger than a BB gun (and some pistols) before I got him the .243. That day, we did a little shooting with a .22, then I took about 12 shots with his .243 to get the scope sighted in. I gave the rifle to him, and he put three shots in under an inch at 50 yards. Should be plenty accurate. Where we are hunting, my longest shot on three deer last fall was about 85 yards. We'll be going out this weekend to get mine sighted in, and to get him a little more trigger time on his Model 7, this time at 100 yards. He is chomping at the bit to get out to the lease this fall... :D

Mine was a Remington .30-06 bolt action with a Walnut stock and a 9x Bushnell scope. I use it now. A very pricey gun, but a free gift from dear old Grandpa. He won it in a gun raffle, so he only spent $5 on it.

My first deer rifle is the one i still use today and that's a savage model 110 .30-06. I don't know that i'll ever find a rifle that i like better. Maybe it's just because my dad bought it for me. But i can say for sure i'll pass this one on to the next generation.
