I killed more deer with a 30-30 win and a 307 win than any other rifle.

When I rifle hutn I stick with my .270 or my .280, although my .280 is a pretty shooter and I don't really like to drag it through the woods so I generally go with my .270 145 grain Federal Premium. That rifle has expensive taste in bullets. I have shot all the major brands and styles out of it and it groups the FP better than any. But I mostly bowhunt these days so I don't drag the bangstick out much.

I love my 180 grain .30-06 cartridge for rifles and 40 for pistols. Not sure if I really have reasons, I just have the recoil memorized and like their destruction paths.

.30-06 I hunt deer.
.40 I shoot paper targets, beer cans, and if an intruder ever comes then them too.

Where I live in NY, rifle use is pretty new, and I havent done alot of it yet. I have always used shotguns, and by far my favorite is my 20 guage shooting sabots. One year I did go rifle hunting and my old 30-30 did a good job. I am looking at picking up a Thompson Encore or Contender pistol and would like to get it in 260 or 270.

I just recieved two guns from my uncle in mint condition. A 30-06 Remington model 742 Woodsmaster and the Remington model 700 BDL in a 7mm Rem Mag. I really like this 7mm. Thanks uncle :)

When I hunt with a rifle I have my favorite PA caliber and that is a Remington 760 Gamemaster pump in 30-06 loaded with a 165gr Nosler Partition bullet. During the PA season we have always been able to tell if one of our group shot because the carbine makes a very distinctive crack in the woods. I also have a .270WSM which i have yet to kill a deer with that is loaded with a 150gr Fusion bullet. Very good shooter, but yet to kill an animal with.

.270 seems to be the norm here...I just love my .30-06 because it was my first rifle given to me by my grandfather. He won it in a gun raffle. I'm sure I'll get a nice .270 that I love as much as everyone else does theres.

the .270 and .30/06 are pretty much the same gun. The .270 is a necked down version of the 06. The 06 carries a little more punch for bigger animals but it's not that much different. If you're going to buy another gun I would shy away from the .270. Don't get me wrong, it's a fantastic gun but you basically already have one.

I agree with KW, the .30-06 is probably the most versitile caliber ever created by man and so you can buy a ton of different ammo for that caliber for just about any hunting needs and some of the new ammo is supposed to reduce recoil if that ever bothers you.

The only reason I bought my .270 was because I wanted that new Bar model that came out and I already had a bolt action in 7mmRemMag and so I decided on something a bit smaller, i'm probably more in love with the Bar than I am the caliber. LOL

I'm not ever one to try to talk someone out of buying a new toy but IMO the only reason for you to get a different caliber than your .30-06 would be if you want to go real small caliber into varmint hunting or go big for buffalo or the big bears.

I have a .30-30 lever, .44 rem mag lever and a .270. I love the .270. I handload for it and it is a great shooter that I dont think I will ever get rid of.

I know the difference. The only slight difference is that .270 was made for hunting and has less recoil and shoots flatter while the .30-06 has a wide variety of grain loads due to its military testing and background. Being similar cartridges has nothing to do with my choice though. Even more than a hunter, I am a gun enthusiast and trying to start a collection. But, when it does come to hunting, depending on the size of the animal and location of the hunt, the .270 and .30-06 do compete at different distances using different loads. So, long story short, I want both 8) 8) 8) 8) 8)

Like I said, I wasn't trying to discourage you, however, I own both and the recoil isn't any lighter out of the .270 than the 06. I hear that a lot but I have never noticed a difference between the two out of factory loads when it comes to recoil.

I've got to join some of the othey guys on this one. The only rifle that I take into the woods is my Remington 700 XCR Bolt Action .270. I love the .270. Not too much recoil, nice flat shooter, and packs a good punch with the right 130 or 150 grain ammo. Hell, Jack O'Connor took every kind of North American game with it.

Oh, I know you weren't. I'm surprised on the recoil, though. It definitely depends on what cartridge load you are using but I notice quite a difference when shooting my cousins .270 with a 130 or even 150 grain cartridge compared to my .30-06 using a 180 grain cartridge. I only use 180 grain for my .30-06 but not sure what load my cousin had when I shot his .270. Either way, I want want want...BOTH

EDIT: You know what, I am going to test this recoil thing here on labor day. I will be up at the PA hunting cabin with my cousin so I will buy both 130 and 150 grain .270 and shoot his rifle and then shoot my .30-06 with my 180 grain and pay more attention to the recoil. :?
