Whitetails Nose

Postby Hazen » Sat Jan 31, 2004 12:58 pm

I've always heard how strong a deer's nose is....and of course it's a common rule. But does anyone know of any evidence of how exactly strong it is?

deer's nose is very strong!

It is the deer's strongest defense against it's predators!

It is so strong that it can wind you up to 100 yards or more! (300 feet or more)

they are strong, which means that you need to wear scentless clothes, and scent block sprays..

Not only that, but he will see you too, so sit still! (which i am sure you know that)

Hunter's don't know how strong a deer's sense of smell is, but i have had observations..

good luck and god bless :D

I read an article on deer's smell, and it said, "while smelling a trail, they can identify individual deer using that trail, while a dog may get confused on which deer track it is fallowing"

there since of smell is amazing....and like someone before me said...its their main defense againt predators. Just watch how often a deer lifts it head to smell the air. I personally have never been winded by a deer (when i say that ive never had a deer in my sight run away after they caught wind of me). I always use cover sent. My wood tree stand sits in the middle of three trees and i spray coon pee on each othe 3 trees.

That sent blocker stuff helps but its overrated. If your worried about it...you can just do some simple steps to keep your sent down. Buy sent wafers that smell like dirt...and store your hunting gear in a box that had some of them in it. Buy sentless deoderant soap and shampoo. And shower regualalry with the sentless soap and stuff. You would be surpised how much body odor your build up in a day sitting in your stand.

Another thing you can do is use all kinds of other sents to try and mask your sent. If its during the rut...take film bottles poke some holes in it and put a couple cotton balls in it. Then put either doe estrues or buck rut in them and hang them in a perimeter around your hunting area.

If you don't mind the smell...spray your pant legs and boots with cover sent before your actually enter the woods. This will cover any sent left as your walk to your stand. And like i said... spray cover sent on the trees around your stand. Be thoughtful in choosing your type of cover sent. I see alot of guys using red fox pee as a cover sent and red foxes are rare in the area we hunt. And any intelligent deer will pick out that sent and know something is up.
If you can't kill it with a 20 gauge....you don't need to be out there.

I have heard it said that a dog can smell 7 parts per million and a deer can smell 3 parts per million. In other words a deer can smell an ants a--hole up wind in a raging snowstorm.

Guess I don't bother them. Was sitting in my tree just tonight watching the reactions of some that walked under me. The first was a 7pt., he walked right by and down the same path I'd came up, never showed a sign that he'd winded me. 20 minutes later 2 doe did same. One just never knows I guess.

The best tip I can give you to cut down on your trail in and out of the woods is to wear knee high rubber boots. Rubber doesn't leave a scent trail like leather or other boots do. Any outdoors shop carries several brands for reasonable prices. You would be surprised by how warm they keep your feet on those icy days.
