Why the hunting has been so slow!

Any seasoned hunter can see that the rediculas warm weather has cut the deer movement to near nothing. I hunt the same land year after year. Normally I see a respectable amount of deer, with many bucks of various ages. This year the head count is down significantly. The reason is the warmth. Try walking around with your hunting gear on and you will sweat your butt off. Its the same for the deer. Only they can't strip off any layers. So they stay in cover during the day, and stay put till it cools down.
I see alot of deer moving as I drive to my hunting location. You may see a few before 9:00 and then nothing till just before dark. But the good news is that it is going to get colder this weekend. This should help some.
I also suspect that we will experience a strong secondary rut this year, as the bucks have been unable to breed the does in this warmth. The way I see it, the rut, or breeding period was a week or so before gunseason started. This is earlier than past years, which is why I believe we will see a strong secondary rut the last week of the season. Opening day was the worst I have experienced in thirty years afield. I only saw 2 deer, and I saw no deer on the second day. Last year I saw 30 head before bagging a 248 lb ten point opening day. The previous year I saw 50 head opening day. 12 bucks, 5 of which were shooters. I took an eight point that evening. The second day I saw 8 more bucks, 3 of which were shooters.
Don't give up the hunt just yet. Everyone I have spoken with from all over the state has said the same thing... No deer!!

The colder weather will bring the activity we need to succeed. Have you noticed that the arocn are still in the wood bottoms. Pay close attention to the acorn crop as the weather gets colder.
If its warm hunt close to bedding areas, and the cover. If its cold hunt the food, what ever that is in your area!

Happy hunting
