I hunt on about 100 acres in illinois and its mostly woods but there is a little patch of grass about 30 yards x 30 yards that i am going to hang a stand by but only recieves about 4-6 hours of sunlight each day. I was wanting to know if there was any shade tolerent food plots i could plant there.

From what i've read most clover type plot mixes only need 3-4 hours of direct, broken or filtered sunlight each day to grow so if they get that little or more clover blends should be ok.

I have been experimenting with a shady plot, and last year I used a mix that grew pretty good, even without lime or fertilizer. It was called 'Secret Spot' from Whitetail Institute. It says that all you need to do is clear and rake the surface for it to grow, but I tilled it with a roto tiller and it grew great. I would suggest tilling it up and then using fertilizer along with the seed for your best results. This year I am playing around with peas this summer and the 'Winter Greens' brassica mix for the fall. Results to follow later in the year...
