Working dog photos

Postby AussieHog » Wed Jun 06, 2007 4:43 am

Here is a couple of photos of my dogs working. The two white dogs were recently stolen by some lowlife +%#$. These sort of people give all doggers a bad name and I wouldn't like to be in there shoes if ever I catch up with them!! The red dog is "Jacko", an American pit bull cross Australian cattle dog. He is a mad hanger and I havn't seen a pig shake him off yet.Image

That must be an exciting way to hunt pigs. How do you dispatch them?

After reading your other posts I see that you shoot them. I've read of guys useing a knife and thought maybe that was how you were doing it.

Thanks for your question. The way I deal with a pig once the dogs have lugged up is to grab their back, right leg and then lift it up off the ground holding their rump in against your upper legs. Then I slide my left hand down their shoulder and grab the front, right leg. Driving your knees into the pig's left side you lift their legs and 'flip' them onto their side. As they hit the ground you want to land on them with your knees, one in the flank and one on their neck up behind the ears. As long as you keep a hold of that front leg the pig is going nowhere. Then it is just a matter of sticking it with a long blade into the throat and down into the chest cavity and heart. This is not an easy task on a realy big pig and simply sticking them behind the front left leg is somtimes easier. Some hunters choose to shoot the pig in the head while the dogs are holding but I have personaly seen this go bad and hunters going home down a dog because of their own stupidity. We also tie some pigs up to be dealt with later by crossing ropes from front left to back right and vice-versa. I will try and find a photo of this and post it later. Justin.

Found one. You can see how the pig ties work. I'm not sure if I have a photo of me 'flipping' one but I will look.Image
