do you guys think that a 243 wssm will kill a deer in its tracks or is that more of a varmint gun?

.243 deer gun.?

Postby carnivore » Mon Dec 27, 2004 4:27 pm

Most definitely when applied right,I've killed several deer with my 243 but I also got a bad hit on probably my largest body Buck ever this last season I can only credit the bad hit to a twig about the size of a pencil and the fact that I wanted to think that one twig wasn't going to be a problem for such a perfect moment. Because i did see the twig in my scope but it was within probably 1 or 2 feet of the deers body I didn't think it would throw my bullet off much if any at all. Well it did as luck would have it the twig was a factor and that little 243 bullet exploded and my piont of impact was about 6 or 8 inches to the left resulting in a direct hit on the front shoulder that i feel didn't even penetrate enough to get a decent blood trail let alone an exit hole for a good blood trail. My brother and I worked over approximately 10 drops of blood for a couple hours and an 80 yd circle of the piont of impact, and continued to hunt the surrounding area the remainder of the season in case the crows and coyotes came into play and if that deer died it was more than 3/4 miles away from where i shot and was never found.BY US ANYWAY! On perfectly open ground on a clear windless day it's an awesome killen firearm, But i've also been told that bullet can explode and fall to the ground upon impact with a raindrop. I've made my decision about the 243 you'll have to get some more input about the success and failure to know if your hunting application is suitable.for me never in the woods!

I would agree with carnivore. If you are hunting open fields or very light woods you can hunt very affectivly with the 243. It is defintly not the gun to hunt thick woods. I hunted with one for a couple of years and then went to a 30.06 but was pleased with the 243. When I hunt in southern Missouri I still hunt with a 30-30 because it is the best brush gun you will find.

bad call for me

Hoss I've been kicking myself since the missouri opener because I almost took my 30-30 out that morning. heck in that scenario my black powder gun would've worked like a charm

some could argue the fact that the 30-30 is the best brush gun,i have used 30-30 in the brush and most definatly would rather use my 45-70

my nephew uses a .243 exclusively during rifle season. we live in tenn. and hunt thick cedar/hardwoods forest. he has never had any complaints. i think it is shot placement and watching out for those little twigs. sorry to hear that carnivore. happy huntin

time for overkill

Postby carnivore » Tue Dec 28, 2004 7:48 am

I'm with ya on that 45-70 grizz but my wallet's not listenin, I remember earlier when you furbang hoss quigley and a few of the fellas were talkin of big bangs and bigger bores, and I think I replied something to the affect of you can kill an elephant with a straight pin but placement is every thing well that still stands true. this year on the missouri opener I had two nephews wanting to hunt with my brother ,their dad and Of the 4 rifles I own that are suitable for deer in Mo. are 50cal. muzzleloader,20ga. fullrifle slug gun, savage 30-30 bolt,rem.243 bolt. I've got more $ tied up in the 243 so no more than the two nephews handle a firearm through out the year I definitly didn't want the leupold knocked off that 243 I guess uncle jess has become the gun bank but these boys are 21 and 25 yrs. old and that gun loaning is gonna taper off.because them boys need to prioritize their money a little better through out the year. I've bought guns for my son since he was 10 yrs and now he's 21 yrs and owns more than i do.and there's no excuse anymore for those nephews to not have their own firearms. ok enough of uncle jesses bitchin any way i'm seeing it your way if all comes together by next season, if i have to set it on two wheels carnivore will be rolling out a big bore because no more time than i have to get out in the woods and waiting all year for the Mo. opener , a twig is not gonna be one of the factors.

I'd be willing to give you a $100 bill for that .243 and scope. That way you could come closer to getting that 45-70. :D This offer won't stand long. :D

.243 WSSM

Postby pogoshaw » Mon Jan 24, 2005 4:55 pm

My .243 WSSM Browning Medallion will knock a deer down in it's tracks from 200 to 300 yards. Great ballistics make the .243 WSSM 100 grain bullet a great choice for whitetail or other thin skinned animals. Plus you have the option to drop down to a 55 grain bullet and knock the ground hogs dead at about 4100 fps +. With the Boss feature on the .243 wssm, you can accurately shoot at distances far exceeding 300 yards. Great all around gun!!!!!

.243 Wssm

Postby jrp » Wed Feb 16, 2005 10:29 pm

2 deer taken during past season with new Win. 70 in .243 wssm. 100 gr PowerPoints. First deer droped in tracks. Second deer ran 10-15 yards. Both exited with extensive internal damage. Both shots under 100 yards in hard wood bottom. I was favorably impressed.
