x-bolt medallion vs winchester sxr

Postby gzinga » Thu Jun 25, 2009 10:28 am

hi,

I have a remington 700 sps which I hate. The action is a piece of junk, it just drags alot and the trigger it is as hard as you can make it. The stock is ugly and the gun is heavy. The magazine looks like out of a toy, not sure if you have ever seen one but it's pretty ridiculous.

I am sure many people love the sps and there are ways to make it better but I will need to drop much $$$. So I am going to sell it and switch to something I may enjoy more and will be esthetically more pleasant. I do admit that the latter may or may not be an issue for some.

I went to my local shop and put side by side the winchester sxr and the x bolt med. I gave myself few days to think about and I am doing some internet research. The two guns are completely different of course, but both feel wonderful and both have great triggers.

the sxr would be in 300 WSM and the x bolt would be in 308.

any input is appreciated

Pretty sure the new X-bolt has gone to a plastic magazine also but that its very nicely made and doesn't have a cheap feel to it, you may want to see if thats true or not as its something I read somewhere.

I have a Browning A-Bolt in 7mm Rem Mag, I bought it back when they first came out and it is a great gun, the X-bolt isn't a lot different but just has some minor refinements over the A-bolt.

From what I understand on the X-bolt you can open the bolt while the safety is on which is a nice safety feature, on my A-bolt the bolt is locked when the safety is on so you have to switch the safety off and make the gun hot/live to remove a round in the chamber so the X-bolt is safer from that respect.

I also have a Browning Bar Lightweight (sem auto) in .270 winchester I bought about 3 years ago and it is a very nice rifle also, same outstanding crisp and noncreep trigger and both it and the A-bolt have the similar metal removable magazine.

I got both of mine in the black composite stalker, not as pretty as their wood but I don't have to worry about scratching them up.

I've never used a Winchester SXR so I can't help you there.

Have you eliminated the option of other rifles? Wal-Mart....(I know, Wal-Mart) has been selling Weatherby Vanguards in 300 Win Mag and .30-06 for decent prices. You might want to check them out before making a decision. My counsin went and purchased the 300 Win Mag and after his dad, my uncle, shot it, he (his dad) went back and bought the other two they had (one in 300 Win Mag and the other in .30-06). They are outstanding rifles in my opinion.

Weatherby makes a fine gun no doubt. But you got to but Weatherby ammo for it.Thats my only problem with it,least you used to have buy that ammo only for it,could have changed.

I know this may sound cheesy but I live in a "small" town santa cruz and I like to support local businesses, so even though walmart may have some deals it is not an option for me, unless I need 100 rolls of toilet paper and 5 gallons of mouth wash :)

my gun shop had one of those and it felt really good. Good trigger, good all around. But so I could say of my 700, if you step back and look at the rem 700 in an objective way is a great freakin gun. Just the fit and finish is not right.

so it was 700 OTD + 130 for a timney trigger + you need to spend money to work the action you are about at 1K with a plastic stock. Literally my action sometimes get stock when I try to push it back in and it worries me to the point I don't trust that gun

with the same money I can get the x bolt ready to go! It has a much better trigger, action, stock and barrel. The A bolt would be another option but I think on the X they fixed few things here and there.

As far as the bullet, my fiance's family has been shooting 30-06 for generations (that's how I got into hunting) but I also like to explore new things....(somebody is gotta do it) ....

the 300 WSM came up because 1) I like the short throw 2) it has better punch than the 308. It seems to combine the 30-06 with the precision of the 308 and its short throw.

though is more expensive, but I am thinking since I reload my 45 I can probably reload my rifle with a bit of investment in a single stage press

thoughts?

You can get all the brands through Walmart, they may only have a few brands of rifles sold the most often in the store but they can order a Browning or whatever through their warehouse and it will be cheaper than any local store and you will get it in about 4 days.

I checked out Walmart when I bought my Browning Bar .270 and Walmarts price was about $100 cheaper than what the cheapest price was at the local gun shops where I live.

That's not cheesy at all. I wish more people did their business like that. I try to stay away from the box stores for that same reason.

Agreed 100%. I typically gravitate towards the same small town mom and pop stores, especially gun stores, just didn't want to exclude the option.

WOW,,,interesting topic,,,as far as rifle,,there are many fine options available,,i am a firm believer in firearms and tools particularly,,,YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR! Take your time,,find what fits you and your wallet. As far as cartridges,,what are you hunting or hope to hunt,,whats your range ability, how well do you handle recoil, what cartridges are readily available to purchase in your area?

BROWNING X-BOLT MEDALLION

Postby DAN'L BOONE » Tue Nov 10, 2009 2:51 pm

JUST HAVING PURCHASED AN X-BOLT IN THE 300WSM, AND OWNING AN A-BOLT .308, I CAN SPEAK FROM EXPERIENCE THAT THE X-BOLT IS THE LONG AWAITED UPGRADE FROM THE A-BOLT. THE TRIGGER ACTION IS AMAZING, THE BOLT SAFETY IS GREAT FORWARD THINKING, AND THE POLYMER CLIP IS PERFECT. THIS RIFLE HAS A VERY SMOOTH ACTION AND DEAD ON ACCURATE. YOU TRUELLY DO GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR AND I AM CONTENT WITH EVERY DIME SPENT. :P

I would much rather have a 300. wsm over a 308. win any day. But i love the A-Bolt and the X-Bolt. I would say look around for a 300. wsm in the X-Bolt

I also have an A Bolt syn in 30-06 and it is an excellent gun, awesome shooter and lighter than my winchester 70 feather weight 7mm-08. If you're looking at new, check out Thompson Centers new bolt guns, they are also very nice and you can't beat TCs quality.
