X3B deer hunting

Hey Guys,

I'm new to this site, so go easy on me.
Just drew x3b tags for my boy and I and have been pouring over the topo map for 2 weeks. There is an area in the very southeastern corner of the zone that looks really interesting to me. It's called the Coppermine Hills and looks to be a lot of high elevation sage country. I just don't have but about a day to scout and am going in pretty green. Any help or info would be greatly appreciated. Also, anybody know anything about Dismal Swamp? Thanks again.

Dismal Swamp

You are truly lucky to get that tag. I have been trying for 10 years and haven't been lucky enough to get drawn for that area again. Dismal swamp is a great area to hunt. The MT that borders the south end of Dismal is great. We have killed several deer between 25-35 in that area and have seen a lot more. I am not gonna give away the secrets of that area but can leave yo with this. Spend the better part of a few days driving the entire area finding the hidden canyons, creeks and private property lines. If you ventur into the Cowhead properties, be careful those guys are serious. It's easy to accidently get onto their land. If you hunt Dismal be patient. The deer seem to appear after everyone leaves.
Good luck and let me know what you see.

Hey Bud,
I really appreciate the reply. I have a good friend that is in the same boat as you. Hunted x3b for years and hasnt drawn a tag 4 years in a row. If I'm not mistaken the mountain you reference is Mt. Bidwell. Plan A is to camp at the end of the trail that crosses 12 mile creek, climb about 1000 ft. and let the summit roaders push the deer to us. If things dont pan out plan B is to move down below Eagleville to the Coppermine Hills area. I think a lot of poor guys that finally drew x5b tags could be in real fire trouble. Between the Blue fire in the South Warners and the huge burn East of Ravendale between Shinn Mountain and Observation Peak I have to think that a lot of deer will be pushed into that southeast corner of x3b. I'm no biologist but I've got to believe that if the feed's gone so are the deer. Thanks again, I'll keep you posted. P.S Know anyone who wants to trade a hog hunt for a turkey hunt?

I just looked at my topo map and Mt Bidwell is correct. Obviously opening weekend is the best. We would always sit on opening day and always kill one deer in our group just sitting in an opening. I hunted around 12 mile creek and if I'm not mistaken it heads towards the Cowhead properties. Later on in the week this is a great area because of all the pressure that pushes deer out of the swamp area.

As for the Pig hunt for a turkey hunt. I have access to both. I live in south western Fresno County (near Monterey County) there are so many pigs here its a problem. I can drive out on several county roads while patroling and see tons of pigs. Unfortunatly its all private and only one guy will let me hunt of his property. I grew up in Redding and turkey hunting is great in that area. Good luck on finding someone.
