Well I have 2 that I use most of the time. For straight deer hunting, coyotes, etc I have to say my Remington 700 BDL in 25-06 has to be the choice.100 gr Barnes X for deer(going to try the tripple shock when I use up my x's)
The other is my all round gun.Ruger M77 All weather in 300 Win MAg
With 150 gr BArnes Tripple shock bullet there is nothing in North America I would be scared to shoot :)

Deer rifle

Postby chevychris » Mon Oct 23, 2006 8:08 pm

I use a Sako model 995 bolt action synthetic stock in .270 (what else is there?) with a Bushnell 4x12x40 scope. Winchester 150 gr. ammo. That gun with the factory ammo shoots nice tite groups (under an inch) all day. Killed alot of deer with it and three small moose. In the shotgun season I use an old J.C.Higgins 12 ga. semi-auto with rifle sights that is also pretty deadly with slugs(2 deer last year). I also have an old .303 Enfield that was my dad's gun and I shot my first deer with it and when I broke the scope on the .270 I used it to take a 10 pointer!Chris.

Hey carbine i was just in Orangeburg, SC hunting. I use a 7mm magnum STW. I have a Leupold vari x three tactical. The rifle has a bedded hogue stock and has been glassed in. The barrel has been cryo treated, squared to bolt, and lapped. The action has been smoothed and the trigger lightened. Baddest gun I have ever owned. The gun is a Remington 700 stainless.

Usein a .243 with a 50-400 yard scope.

Kinda big and soaks up alot of light.
But worth it for those long shots.

ccclean, Gun sound sweet. You hunting fields, piplines, or powerlines with that flat shooter? Did you do any good in SC? I decided to just hunt NC and Alabama this year, but drove down to my usual huntin' ground in SC, and wish I had bought my SC tags now!

P.S. Just bought another Model 100 carbine off GunBroker!

The mods that I know of are mainly the sporterizing of the gun. Cutting down the stock and removing the front clamp to allow the barrel to float. Installing the scope can sometimes be a problem because of the throw of the bolt--never was an issue for me, but I've heard stories.

My .303 was manufactured in 1943. It was sporterized and left all greased up in surplus until I bought it 12 years ago for about $150. It has shot plenty of caribou (whitetail is shotgun only 'round here) I can hit consistant bulleyes at 100 yards. The large clip is nice when you're shotting further distances. For sure a .300 win shoots flatter, but I don't have to reload so often!

LOL????? There shouldn't be an LOL after that sentence. Losing a wounded deer isnt a laughing matter and giving up on it after 2 hours isnt either. Whether the trail went cold or not, you should put in at least a days worth of looking. Get friends, get a tracking dog(if legal), anything but give up after 2 hours!!!

Sorry for the hijacking, but this irritated me. Back to the regularly scheduled topic....

I must agree with Doc,there is nothing funny about wounding an animal and giving up after only 2 hours. How would you like to be hurt in the woods and the rescue team give up looking for you after only 2 hours.?Not so funny if you look at it like that.Is it? I can see nothing funny about your statement.IMO you should have your hunting license taken for the rest of the season.

Im a gun nut and guide for an outfitter in sask. Canada on occasion.
My favorite is a zoli alpen custum rifle in 270. I have taken many animals both moose , elk, bear and deer with it. I have a voere 300 win mag that I love and it drops game as fast as anything, I love my ruger 45-70, my 338 sako, my 270 wea. mag. and Oh my God what a fight I have with myself each year, what gun to take elk hunting.. they all shot wonderfully well. But you know what they all work if you hit the game right.. anyone else have such a delema>> hahahahah.??

I switched from a 30-3- to a 30-06. Big differance, the 30-06 takes them down one shot no tracking blood. Lots of people say over kill but I bag to differ. I hunt for food and sport and you just can't compae the two guns. I have not fired twice in 5 years. If all you have or can afford is a small gun then thats alright but if you can get a 30-06, 308 or 300 winch mag do it you will thank me later.

HERE in delaware we have to use shotguns. I shoot a 870 wingmaster with a cant-lever rifled barrel and a 1-4 leoupold on top. In the rifle states I shoot an old 35 rem.or a 300wsm.How come every one always talks about how great a 30-30 is in the brush? The slug gun is gonna cut through a hell of a lot more.Plus with these new barrels and modern slugs you get about the same range and trajectory.Just a thought.

Research how long the .30-30 has been around and how long the slug gun has. You will see why everyone talks about it. Great caliber and I bet it has killed more deer than all slug guns combined.

Good point Doc.The stats dont lie.Every rifle state that i hunt, i think i can find a group of guys that has someone shooting a 30-30.And i bet if i asked the others who old faithful was, that would be thier answer.
Im just saying that if your hunting the brush your not really shooting any big distances so why not shoot the bigger bullet and be sure to mow down any trees that are in the way.(thats sarcasim i dont really try to shoot down full grown trees.)l

I dont get to rifle hunt much but when I do I have a couple choices.
Husqvarna Imperial in 7mm Mag.
Winchester M70 in .308
Sporterized KAR 98 Mauser in 8mm
Remington 742 in 30-06
Sporterized GEW 98 Mauser in 30-06.

Choices, choices... LOL

We can only use shotguns and muzzle loaders during the deer seasons here.
My fav. is my old Rem. 1100 and Im lovin' my new TC Omega.

I have taken atleast 75 deer with my Ruger M77 .270 3x9 leupold, range anywhere from 10 feet to 370 yards. Wouldnt trade it for anything, I retired the old Husquvarna .308 to the gun safe. Taking the Ruger Elk hunting this fall!

WOW those are some heavy bullets. My buddy bought a a-bolt in .270win 3 yrs ago. I shot it 2x and then went and got my own. I usually shoot 135gr through it. But I started using XP3 elites in 150gr this year. I also have a winchester M70 in .308. The gun was given to me by my uncle when he passed. I have now retired it. I did shoot a lot of deer with that gun though.

Wow ! all the lucky guys get to use rifles to hunt with. Here in Ohio we cannot use a rifle for deer. I use a 12 Gauge ultra slugger H & R single shot with a rifled barrel and Federal barns expander sabot slugs for ammo to reach out there like the rifles can. I can shoot a 3 inch group at 150 yards with this combo. Still would prefer my .243 if it were legal though.
Happy Hunting,

I have a number of guns fully capable of killing deer and have killed deer, from .243 to 300wsm and .444 Marlin. I killed more deer with my 30-30win, I retired the old girl years ago and I take her out once in awhile for old time sake.
My go to gun now is .307win, it is a shame Winchester didn't come out with it twenty years sooner, it might of had a chance to be a popular rifle, now it is just history. If anybody ever has a chance on buying a 307win., jump on it and you won't be sorry.
I don't kill innocent animals, just the ones that look guilty.

I've got a Browning A bolt with a synthetic stock in 30-06 with a 2.5x8 Leupold VXIII if I'm taking a stand and a Remington 7600 pump carbine 30-06 with a 1.5x5 Leupold VXIII if I'm still hunting and a 7600 pump carbine 30-06 with a peep sight if it's snowing hard or I am taking a track. Not that I'm partial to 30-06, I just like to only bring one type of shell to camp and I don't have to switch shells back and forth on my belt. I've also got a 270, 338 win mag, 7mm08, 35 rem and some others.
If I had to pick just one it would be the 30-06 pump with the scope.
