Your hunting Rifle?

Postby goingwildoutdoors » Thu Dec 02, 2004 11:41 pm

Just wanting to find out what kind of Rifle it is that everybody is using when they head out into the woods. I've got myself a good old .303 British with a few modifications that has served me very well.

That ole .303 has taken alot of game worldwide. All I hunt with anymore is the 45-70 or my .50 muzzleloader.

I've killed every single one of my deer with a 6.5 X 55 Swedish Mauser (hence my nick :) ). However, my uncle recently let me borrow his .44 magnum handgun with 4X scope, and I plan on making some use of it soon. The season has just started in alabama :) . Still two more months to go, and you can kill 2 deer a day in my county :) .

Hi folks,
In Ohio I used a model 12 that my grandfather bought when he was a kid. We moved to Kansas and I was invited to an elk hunt, so I bought a savage 30-06 thinking it would handle elk and deer. First year I used it the deer ran right up to my tree, short shot. Never did get to go on the elk hunt. I'm tough on guns so it has a synthetic stock. I'm hefty enough I don't notice a kick, so that part doesn't make a difference to me.
Debbie uses an 8 mm mauser that I reworked for her. It's pretty heavy and doesn't seem to kick too bad. That gun takes a lot of abuse too, but just keeps on shooting.

Hey grizz,
I tried a Ruger 357 last year and was really disappointed in my ability to reach out past 50 yds with accuracy. I also tried a 44 which seemed to shoot straighter. Don't know why the difference, (it couldn't be me), but if I had it to do over again I'd go with bigger and heavier.

I have a Remington 700 in .270 with a Nikon 3x12x50 scope. It's my go to gun. My favorite is a Kimber model 8400 in .270 WSM. I bought it last year and that is one fine shooting rifle. I haven't had the chance to take a deer with it though. Most of my deer hunting is done with a bow.

i use a 7mm mauser(7x57) myself its an oldie but still shoots good, also mod. 336 marlin in 30/30, 308 win bolt action, used to have a russian sks, horton cross bow, italian sporterized carbine conventional muzzle loader, and my old trusty 1100 rem. 12 guage. i use all of them for deer primarily. seems to be a good combo for these arkansas deer :o
a kill isnt what makes the hunt successful, but it sure helps

i have foudn that the ar 15 al thought they are nto cheap you can shot them all day and not feel it and they are not easy to brake there made for war so they don't get hurt if you drop them get them water throw them in sand anything you might do in the field there super easy to clean and you can break it down most of the way with out tools of any kind and they coem in sizes from 5.62 mm which is .223 to 7.62 to 308 they get bigger and even as small as 22

I have been using a Remington 700 ADL .30-06. I recently inherited a 700 BDL 7mm Rem. Mag. and I just purchased a 700 ADL .243. I'll probably use the .243 this fall. This year will be my 12 year old son's first time in the woods. He has a Remington Model 7 Youth in .243. We'll be hunting in the Texas Hill Country where the deer are pretty small, so the .243's ought to pack plenty of punch.

I am using a 300 win mag with a muzzle break on the end to eat up some of the kick. My Scope of choice is a 6.5x20 Simons now I am sure there are some of you that might be skeptical of Simons but I have to say its been great. My ammo is 150 grain ballistic tips which hold an incredible grouping.
I have been told by many that its too much gun for White Tails but I have proven many wrong when we have looked at damage caused by lesser calibers.

I as well use a 300 win mag, dont let them tell ya its too much gun for the whitetails either. How much time do you spend trailing a deer shot with a 300 compared to other smaller rifles. Leaves nice blood trails to see.  If you get a good shot with any rifle it wont matter.

I hunt deer with lots of rifles. Killing them with everything from a 303, 30-40 to 416.

This years walking companion is a Kimber 250 Remington. I've been very pleased with its performance. I hunt 3 states, and to date have 3 bucks with three shots; shortest was 65 yds, longest 158 yards; all heart shots.

Next years walking companion will be a 375 Marlin 336. Just haven't been able to get a load that works in the rifle.

I agree with you Lower I have been happy with my gun and I don’t see any reason to change to a smaller caliber. I am a firm believer in shot placement and knock down and as far as I am concerned the 300 win mag is a great all-around good caliber. Shoot just the idea that I could go to Alaska and hunt everything from White Tail to Grizzly with one gun is what sold me.

30-30 here... you just can't go wrong in the woods with the ole winchester 30-30. Plenty of knockdown power, and a heavy bullet will stay on track through a few twigs.

Yea, they are ok for the youth! I out grew my 30 30 years ago! About the time I was unleashed with the 308! You wanna see some knockdown, try that one out!

Don't get me wrong, I have killed alot of deer with my ol' Marlin 30 30 but, it just ain't as accurate as the rest over 100 yards.

I hunt alot of pastures, highlines and cutovers and a 30 30 is of no use there!

*lives in missori* Here, there's nothing but hills. I swear, at no point in any of my hunting areas, can you see past 75 yards. By the way! I'm barely out of the 'youth' column. I've racked up a solid 18 years so far. :D In addition, I love the lever action. It's the coolest thing ever devised for a wanna-be cowboy.

I hunt whitetails with everything from a 22-250 to a 300win mag. I don't think that it is the cartridge that makes for a better gun, I think that it is the shooter knowing the capabilities of his/her gun. I have grown really fond of my 2 7mm-08's. I guess that I am fortunate that I have what my wife calls "too many rifles to choose from". Her biggest complaint is that I have rifles still new in the box.

Bear the one that I really can't wait to shoot is a pre-64 m70 243 featherweight. I got it in a car deal. My hunting buddy is only 7yrs old when he gets old enough to hunt and carry a rifle it will be his. Made in 1955 still new unfired. This is a special gun for a special partner.

! use a remington model 7 , 7mm-08, i like the model 7 because its a little shorter and lighter. which is perfect for the stuff i hunt in in georgia, and its alot more comfortable in treestand, but it shoots AWSOME i have consistantly 1.5 inch groups at 100yds
