Jessie wrote:Hi all,
Any help would greatly be appreciated. A few of us are planning a hunt in the Bighorn for the fall of 2009. We are from Wisconsin and have hunted Antelope and Mule deer around the Gillette area in past years. Had a blast!! Well, we want to give the Bighorn a try for deer. I'm having a hard time figuring out which area to hunt, what is public, ect... We payed the tresspass fee when we hunted the last 3 times out around Gillette and would like not pay a fee and to just find public land to hunt. Any suggestions on where to hunt or what Region to apply for? I think we will purchase the preferance point this summer and pray we get in next fall. Again, any help would be greatly appriciated.

Well the area you're refering to is huge so where do I start? I grew up on the Big Horns. You're best bet to get a monster mulie is anywhere on top. Your best bet is to hunt the deep canyons and valleys in the porcupine area near the radar dome on the Lovell side. I have shot 35" mule deer up there with 7" bases. The other area to hunt is less traveled and gives you better odds of bagging the big one. If you google the medicine wheel on the big horns you will see the road that takes you right past the medicine wheel. It's only open to drive past and not stopping by the medicine wheel but once you're through you can stop and get out. DO NOT STOP BY THE MEDICINE WHEEL. It is a native american area and the forest service is very strick on you if you stop. The wheel is 1000's of years old and is now fenced in. Once you go past the wheel and go over a cattle guard you can stop and also hunt all the way down to the bottom of the mountain. This is the best area to find a boone and crocket class buck. I encourage you to take tire chains incase of a freak wyoming snow storm. Take good binocs and glass every valley and all the open areas next to the pines. The bucks tend to stay within 20 feet or so of the thick forests. Good luck!!!!!!!!
